Vanessa Carter started working at Butler Sherborn on the 16th October 2000, in the flagship office based in Burford. Vanessa is now an Associate Partner, Head of the Burford office and the Lettings Department for Butler Sherborn.

What brought you to Burford?

I was born and grew up in Scotland.  In 1998 I travelled South, on holiday, to visit my husband’s family and it was then that I fell in love with Burford.  The pretty high street, the eclectic shops, quirky period buildings and the beautiful surrounding countryside.  I made a flippant comment ‘one day I will live and work here!’   2 years later a chance browse on a recruitment company’s website, led to a job offer as a lettings administrator.  Flippant comment turns reality and my journey in Butler Sherborn started.

What do you love the most about your Job?

I am a naturally inquisitive (some may say nosey!) person and I just love having the opportunity of seeing inside some of the most fantastic and historic properties around the Cotswolds.  Also specialising in Cotswold lettings for as many years as I have, I really do enjoy being able to advise and assist landlords achieve the best possible outcome for their letting.

How has the business changed over the years?

Technology is the big one.  Computers are faster and now in our pockets as well as on our desks; websites are more responsive and everyone is more digitally connected. It allows us to connect globally and we attract more and more clients nationally and internationally seeking our expertise and local knowledge.

Although you can’t beat the personal touch in this business.  Despite the evolving technology available – zooms, teams, text etc, I still believe in the more traditional communications.  Face to face contact or picking up the phone, for those extra discussions, showing a genuine interest in people’s needs and wants – I truly consider a key to success.

Do you have any particularly memorable times?

There are a few,  from ghostly goings on in an old manor house, to  a herd of cows surrounding us on a road keeping us trapped for hours!  However, the one that sticks out the most for me is meeting one of my childhood, ‘bedroom poster’ singers and doing a number of viewings with them and their family.  I was truly ‘star struck’ and like a giggling schoolgirl all day!

What Motivates you?

Whilst it’s a cliché – I really do love my job and the people I work with.  I have met some fabulous members of the Butler Sherborn team over the years and working in a company where people matter is so important.   I also have an inexhaustible energy and am committed to succeeding.

Any advice for anyone starting their working life in Estate Agency?

Keep working hard.  Don’t wait for opportunities to come to you, seek them out and show your worth. Stand out from the crowd, know your business, be honest and committed.  Starting from a junior member of the team to where I am now, was no easy task, but the effort is worth it.

Congratulations for 21 years in Butler Sherborn and here’s to many more!!

We are a returning client of Butler Sherborn and we would highly recommend them if you’re looking to sell your property. The two properties we sold with BS were very different, but the BS team have always been extremely professional, approachable and friendly. And their communication skills are second to none! Thank you again!
