Mother’s Day or Mothering Sunday is celebrated this year on Sunday 31st March and on different days in other parts of the world.  It is a day of honouring the family, and dates back to the 16th century, when people returned to their mother church for a service held on the fourth Sunday in Lent, which is three weeks before Easter Sunday.

Your ‘mother church' was either the church where you were baptised, or your local parish church or cathedral, the mother of all the parish churches in the diocese.

Anyone who did this was commonly said to have gone ‘a mothering’.  Later on, Mothering Sunday became a day when domestic servants were given a day off to visit their mother church, usually with their own mothers and other family members, and often the only time when whole family could gather together.

Linked to the Christian calendar the date changes every year but it usually falls in late March or early April.
