Pony Club

A great way to start, and with some 10 clubs across the Cotswold area, Pony Club www.pcuk.org is an international voluntary youth organisation for those interested in ponies, horses and riding.

Instruction is given in riding and horsemanship while also promoting sportsmanship and citizenship.

The Pony Club was founded in 1929.  Membership is open to anyone from 5 to 25 with or without their own horse or pony.

Point-to-Point racing

Point-to-Point racing is a form of amateur horseracing over a minimum distance of two and a half miles, across birch fences of around 4 foot 6 inches and a couple of ditches, and the perfect opportunity for young and upcoming riders to ‘have a go’.

These are also highly sociable occasions, and whether you love horses or simply enjoy country life, a car-boot picnic in your wellies surrounded by dogs and children usually takes place in a muddy field as most events are held in the spring - so wrap-up warm!

Anyone for polo?

Whether you know your chukka from a ‘hired assassin’, or the difference between a high and low goal, watching polo is a very pleasurable way to spend a sunny summer’s afternoon, and usually good for some royal or celebrity spotting.  In Gloucestershire, try Cirencester Polo Club - http://www.cirencesterpolo.co.uk/, the Beaufort Polo Club - https://beaufortpoloclub.com or the Dallas Burston Polo Club - https://dbpoloclub.com at Southam in Warwickshire.

Horse trials at their finest

If you want to watch horsemanship at its very best, the Cotswolds sports three of the top horse trials in the country, Badminton in the Spring, Tuesday 30th April - Sunday 5th May www.badminton-horse.co.uk, The Festival of British Eventing at Gatcombe Park, Friday 2nd - Sunday 4th August www.festivalofbritisheventing.com and Blenheim at the end of the summer, Thursday 19th - Sunday 22nd  September www.blenheimhorse.co.uk

Over several days, you can watch the very best British and international riders and horses compete in the gruelling challenge of dressage, cross country and show jumping.
