Katy Freeman joined the Butler Sherborn Burford office in February 2020.

Having worked in the industry locally for some 20 years, she now runs a small and extremely busy team, covering the area from Lechlade to Burford and out to Charlbury.

Have you always lived in the Cotswolds?

Yes, I was born in Coln St Dennis and my family later moved to Upper Slaughter, where my parents still live today. Having moved around the Cotswolds, and  having spent a short time in Wokingham, I have always regarded the Cotswolds as my home.

What do you love most about your job?

Every day is different, and meeting people from all walks of life is really inspiring for me. Seeing the most stunning homes in the Cotswolds, confirms how lucky we are to live in this area.

What do you find the most challenging aspect of the work?

Emotions run high during the buying and selling process, especially in this market. It is vitally important to be available at the end of the phone, and to be on hand to help and advise at any point, all of which can be a challenge sometimes.

How has the business, and the job changed for you over the years?

At the very beginning, starting as a negotiator, I was required to build relationships and match the right buyer to the right property. As you progress and increase your responsibility for the daily running of the sales, the extended knowledge you acquire is not something you can read from a book, you have to be well versed in so many aspects of the property industry and have a good understanding of the older buildings, the conveyancing process and due diligence. In addition, one of the most difficult aspects of the job is managing clients expectations. Above all you must know your market extremely well. There is a lot to cover in one job role.

Have you had any particularly memorable, exciting, scary or odd experiences?

I have a Norfolk terrier called Biscuit, he was in the car once when I turned up at a Market Appraisal, the potential client spotted him and insisted he came with us during our appointment, he had a lovely time in the garden,  and needless to say the flowers were well watered!

What motivates you?

Building long lasting relationships with clients and buyers, the stories behind the houses, the history of  the buildings, and working for a reputable company, within a happy team.

Do you have any advice for anyone starting their working life in Residential Estate Agency?

Rome wasn’t built in a day, an open mind and a can-do attitude and you will do well!

Oxford Garden Design

Drought Tolerant Plants By Oxford Garden Designs

After the long, hot, dry spring and summer the impact of climate change in most of our gardens is obvious. Establishing that pristine, green stripy lawn has been a challenge this summer, and, given the shortage of water in our reservoirs, not sustainable. Many of our favourite garden plants have fried, shrivelled, or even died so it seems inevitable to me that us green-fingered folk will have to make some changes in our approach to maintaining gardens.
