Ben Way, Head of Butler Sherborn Equestrian - Rounds Up the Eventing Season 2024 with Badminton Qualification

As we head into October, the 2024 eventing season is drawing to a close, with the last couple of events left to go for some of the younger horses. Many of the older horses have already started their winter holidays, where they get an eight week break out in the fields.
We have just got back from a trip to Ireland with 3 horses. We were very lucky with the weather for most of the week, other than the biblical rain on the final show jumping day. The highlight of the trip was 10 year old Gun Law, owned by Nicki and Victor Lay, winning the 4* L and qualifying for Badminton. Winning a 4 * Long would be the biggest result of my international career, which alarmingly has now spanned some 20 years! He is a horse we have produced from a 3 year old, which makes the win even more rewarding.
As we head into the winter months, we will continue to work on some of the younger horses in preparation for next season. We will also bring in the 2 and 3 year old horses, from our breeding programme, to start their educations, which is always quite eventful!
The 2024 season has been a strange one, the sport was shaken to its core with the loss of a fellow competitor Georgie Campbell, after a fall at Bicton back in June, along with some competitors suffering lifechanging injuries, which has highlighted the significant risks we all take. However, there were also some incredible highlights at the very top of the sport, capped off by the Brits winning team gold at the Paris Olympics. We must remember that are very lucky to be able to take part in such an amazing sport at some incredible venues, alongside these remarkable animals!
